  • 6" Lift 78 Wagoneer

My son and I are about to install BJ's 6" lift without blocks on his 78 Wagoneer. My question is what is the largest size tire on the stock rims we will be able to use and not have to worry about rubbing.
Then my next question would be at what size tire do we have to change out the stock gearing. He has visions of 36 inch tires according to the forums I have read here that would take fender triming maybe new shackles and what suggested gearing to run these tires? Any help suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I know he likes the look of the wagoneer on the first page of your web. Can we get his to that good looking stance.

    Jack,

I have just installed the 6" kit on my rig, and I will tell you that with a 33" tire there will be some rubbing with full articulation. I have a 33" tire and I am in the process of cutting metal and installing flares.

The larger the tire, the easier it is to brake drive line components, of course this also has to do with driving manerism (sp) Also remeber that the larger the tire, the harder it is to get them to slow down. Your braking system will need some upgrades.

With stock gearing and brakes you will not want to go larger than a 33" tire.

Here is a pic with some trimming starated on the rear..

      Jack,
I completely agree with Jason. My 78 has a 6" BJs leaf kit and in the following picture only has 31s on it. I'm planning on running 33s but will have to go the XJ Bushwacker route like Jason is to maximize efficiency.

Not wanting to hijack your thread but still along the same lines.... I just installed a 4" lift and 33's on my '76 cherokee (I'm wishing I had gone 6"). As long as I dont go over anything more than a curb, I'll be alright. I dont plan on using mine for wheeling anyway. But I am considering fender trimming anyway. Also, the reason I'm posting is what flares fit our jeeps? I notice Steelhorse mentioned the XJ flares. Are those the ones we need since noone lists for older than '84.

yep...they're the best i've seen. i'm planning on using them on mine. i'm sure you could use just about any cut-out style flares. i'm just mentioning bushwacker's like most people say kleenex instead of facial tissue, haha. there was a link for it in another thread i think, but check out this site here: XJ flares on an SJ

it's not my site and i really wish i could find a way to contact the guy cause i have plenty of questions for him!!

like i said earlier, you could probably use and cut-out flares though. just find the ones that best illustrate the wheel opening lines you want and adjust them to fit. a little fabrication and persuasion goes a long way with our rigs

The stock wag wheel sare only 7" wide, which really limits you to a 11.50 wide tire, 10.50 if you dont want excessive wear down the center of the tread. There arent a whole lot of 33x10.50 tires on the market. So you may want to pick up some 8" wide wheels. I run 34" tall tires on my cherokee with a 6" lift and 1.25" of trimming front and rear. The tires come VERY close to rubbing in back.

Got 33x12.5 on my 6" lift of 79 wagoneer (4 door). Yeah, I have some rubbing at VERY FULL articulation, and am cutting my fenders a bit tonite. Should look good. NUMA

You're referring to Jamie's FSJ CATERPILLAR at http://snow.prohosting.com/heimeken/index.htm

Check it out, there is a ton of info there and Jamie seems to be very helpful if you have any questions on your build.
