  • What more can I do to cool.

I live in a desert. I need more cooling options. I'm running the crossflow rad, electric fan, flowkooler pump combo. Stat is 180. I can run all day at 190 or so if I'm off road, but with a load at 70+ mph it will heat up to around 220. I need options. Any ideas. My engine is a mildy built 360 with a hotter cam, MSD, 4bbl 4300, so it's going to run hotter. The days are in the low 90's now, but in a month or so we will be in triple digits.

engine oil cooler, trans cooler, and double-check your base timing and advanced timing, as well as carb mixture. On rigs that see a lot of street use or towing duty, I prefer to take my rigs to a local carburetor specialist company that does tuning, as well as dyno tuning. That makes sure that it's dialed in perfectly, rather than by ear.

I would put a 195 Thermostat in it as well.

Problem with a lower temperature thermostat is your temp is closer to the ambient temp outside. The closer you are to ambient temperature with your thermostat, the harder your cooling system has to work.

If it is 110 outside and you are running a 180 thermostat, there is only a 70 degree difference, so your fan (which should come on at 185 or so) would come on and try to cool it down to closer to the ambient temp.

If it is 110 outside and you are running a 195 thermostat, there is an 85 degree difference so your fan (200 or so) would come on and cool further away from the ambient temp which makes it easier to cool.

If your low speed temp's are ok and run hot or over heat I have seen electric fans wired in reverse and/or the blade installed backwards easy to test with a shop towel if it is unfolded and held in front of the radiator with the fan on it should hold flat to the front of the radiator if it blows away the fan is running the wrong way. Also I have to agree with Brent as I had a that very problem when I lived in Phoenix.

Should have stayed away from the electric fan

I've had plenty of friends run them, and they always have problems with heating. I live in the high desert and temps reach the triple didgets all I did with my 360 was run a clutch eleminatore and a fail safe thermostat, and I run nice and cool. If you don't mind undoing a little of your work anythings wirth a shot.
