Wil the tailgate from an 89 grand wag fit/ work on a 78 wag? I'm pretty sure it will just askin.

The latches are different AND in a different location.

To get a bolt in tailgate, you need one from a 1963-1978 FSJ.

Somewhere around 72/73, they changed and put the seal on the body (before that, it was on the tailgate itself). The latch change is somewhere around mid-78 to late-79 from what I read (many said a 1979 wouldn't interchange with a 1980).

For total bolt in with no mods, you'll need 74-78 if you have a 1978. If you have the 1989, you'll need 1980-1991.
