  • Rag Joint Installation

The first step in replacing is removing your original rag joint. You can find detailed instructions in your factory service manual for removal. Next, you’ll need to disassemble your rag joint (remember to note the locations / orientation of all original components)

You will notice that the rag joint has two pins that are riveted to the original assembly. These are called Safety Pins, and they allow you to keep your steering in the event that your rag joint comes apart. These will need to be removed. You can either carefully grind the back side of the rivets off, or you can drill them out. Be careful not to damage the splined housing when you do this. At this point, the safety pins can be pushed out.

To assemble the new rag joint, first line up the parts and match them to your old parts & original orientation. Next, attach the rag joint to the lower yolk using the new safety pins and washers supplied in our kit, then tighten to factory specifications. Next attach the upper yolk using your original splined clamp from your worn joint and tighten to factory specifications. The splined clamp will only fit on in one orientation, as shown.
