    Hi , I have a J20 ute.( tray back) delivered and reassembled here in Australia in 1981. It has a T 18a G box and a 360 V8.
It has over the past year or so, developed a singing / ringing noise coming from the transmission. It is worst at our Highway speed limit which is 100 Kms. per hour.
The sound goes away if you put power on or slow down. Is is there when you have the throttle feathered. (just maintaining the speed but backed off the pedal)
I thought it was coming from the tail shaft. Could be the diff. but diff sounds are usually different.
    Any ideas people?

first thing I would do is drain the fluid and inspect for fluid condition and metal shavings. Whining / whirring noises tend to be gears that are not properly aligned, or bearings on their way out.
